Newport Road Widening Project Summary

Newport Road east of Interstate 215 between Antelope and Menifee roads

The project improved traffic flow on this main east/west thoroughfare and prepared Newport Road for the upcoming Interstate 215/Newport Road interchange project beginning in 2015. Specifically, the project:
***  Added one traffic lane in each direction between Antelope and Menifee roads
***   Added a double left turn lane from westbound Newport Road to southbound Antelope Road
***   Added a new traffic signal at the intersection of Newport Road and Via Corazon
***   Installed conduit between traffic signals to lay the groundwork for future signal coordination.

Groundbreaking was in July 2013 and the project was completed in March 2014. Median landscaping was completed as a separate project in spring 2015.

The city saved $800,000 on this $3 million project by using existing pavement and landscape materials. The remainder of the cost was funded by a $125,000 Cal Recycle grant, along with a combination of Measure A and Gas Tax funds, and funds derived from payments made by developers in lieu of making improvements required for their particular project as outlined in the Fiscal Year 2013-14 budget.
